Maybe it was the long way home after a bad day, or a drive that never really had a destination. Maybe you pulled over somewhere because the view asked you to, or got behind the wheel just to clear your head and stayed out longer than you meant to. If any of that sounds familiar, you were already car hiking. You just didn't know it had a name.
Where the Name Came FromMy friends and I had been doing this for years before we ever called it anything. Get in the car, pick a direction, and go, with no map and no real destination in mind. One day it occurred to us that people hike mountains and forests all the time, and here we were doing the same thing with a car instead of our feet. The name just made sense, so we kept it.
This was never really about us. It's for anyone who already loves getting in the car and going somewhere, or nowhere in particular, and never had a word for that feeling or a group of people who understood it.
Car Hikers isn't a club you join. It's a name for something you've probably always been.
